Caffeine is most commonly consumed in beverages such varieties of tea and coffee drinks, cold soft fizzy drinks like colas and energy drinks, eaten in chocolate products, or as a flavouring in various foods. It is also used in over the counter medicines like Pro Plus as an aid to relieving tiredness and fatigue.

Feelings of: Caffeine provides stimulation to the central nervous system. It heightens alertness and reduces feelings of tiredness temporarily.

Caffeine is also a diuretic which means you are more likely to want to go to the toilet more often than usual. It can also cause gastrointestinal disturbances, muscle twitching and increased irritability.


There is no age restriction, however some products may carry an advised purchasing age limit. In the UK, products containing caffeine are legal to purchase and consume.

Short Term:

Insomnia, tolerance, nervousness, gastrointestinal disturbances, muscle twitching, rapid heartbeat. Larger overdoses may result in mania, disorientation, hallucinations and even psychosis.

Long Term:

Restlessness, heightened anxiety, dependence, withdrawal symptoms if stopped abruptly, irritability, headaches. There are four caffeine-induced psychiatric disorders: caffeine intoxication, caffeine-induced anxiety disorder, caffeine-induced sleep disorder and caffeine-induced not otherwise specified.
