Alcoholic drinks range in strength and are measured as a percentage (%) per volume.

The higher the percentage, the stronger the effect.

Effects

Feelings of: Reduces inhibitions and increases sense of relaxation. Each unit of alcohol takes approximately one hour for the liver to process.

Penalties

It is illegal to sell alcohol to anyone under 18 (unless they’re 16-17 and eating a meal in a restaurant). The legal limit for driving in the UK is 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The number of drinks it takes to reach this level varies from person to person.

Short term:

Hangover including dehydration, headache, nausea, sensitivity to noise and bright lights, and depression. Somebody under the influence of alcohol can be unpredictable. Lowered inhibitions can make you do things that you would not normally do.

Long term:

Regular heavy drinking can cause stomach disorders, cancer of mouth, and throat, increased risk of stroke, liver cirrhosis, brain damage (including memory problems), high blood pressure, problems with the nervous system, changes in physical appearance (e.g. weight gain, thread veins and purple, bulbous ‘drinkers nose’), sexual and mental health problems, and family and work problems.
